چکیده

Low-ionization broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs present properties that cannot generally be explained by simple orientation effects. We have conducted a deep spectroscopic and imaging study of the host galaxies of the only four BAL QSOs that are currently known at z < 0.4, and found that all four objects reside in dusty, starburst or poststarburst, merging systems. The starburst ages derived from modeling the stellar populations are in every case a few hundred million years or younger. There is strong evidence that the ongoing mergers triggered both the starbursts and the nuclear activity, thus indicating that the QSOs have been recently triggered or rejuvenated. The low-ionization BAL phenomenon then appears to be directly related to young systems, and it may represent a short-lived stage in the early life of a large fraction of QSOs.

We performed spectroscopic observations for a large infrared QSO sample with a total of 25 objects. The sample was compiled from the QDOT redshift survey, the 1 Jy ULIRGs survey and a sample obtained by a cross-correlation study of the IRAS Point Source Catalogue with the ROSAT All Sky Survey Catalogue. Statistical analyses of the optical spectra show that the vast majority of infrared QSOs hav...

Clues to Outflows: Polarization of IRAS-Selected QSOs

Broad-band polarimetry and spectropolarimetry of a complete sample of 18 luminous AGNs (Lbol ≥ 10 L⊙), selected in an orientation-independent way by warm infrared flux, shows that an orientation – dust-covering Unified Scheme like that successfully explored for the lower luminosity Seyfert galaxies applies to the luminous QSOs. Broad emission lines and continuum seen in polarized (scattered) li...

Discovery of Radio-loud Broad Absorption Line Quasars Using Ultraviolet Excess and Deep Radio Selection

We report the discovery of five broad-absorption-line (BAL) QSOs in a complete sample of 111 ultraviolet excess (UVX) QSO candidates also detected in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. All five BAL QSOs, which include two high-ionization BAL QSOs and three low-ionization BAL QSOs, are formally radio-loud. Of QSOs with z > 0.4, 3±2% show low-ionization BALs, and of QSOs with z > 1.5, all radio-loud, 9±5% ...

Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies and the Origin of Qsos

We review the evidence which suggests that ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) are the precursors of optically selected quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and discuss additional data that suggests that the majority, if not all QSOs, may begin their lives in an intense infrared phase. Implications for the host galaxies of QSOs are discussed.

Polarization properties of a sample of broad absorption line and gravitationally lensed quasars

New broad-band linear polarization measurements have been obtained for a sample of 42 optically selected QSOs including 29 broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs. The polarization properties of different sub-classes have been compared, and possible correlations with various spectral indices searched for. The main results of our study are: (1) Nearly all highly polarized QSOs of our sample belong to t...
